JAKARTA, 23 June 2016 - The 9th annual Dialogue between the Federation of Japanese Chambers of Commerce and Industry in ASEAN (FJCCIA) and the Secretary-General of ASEAN, H.E. Le Luong Minh, was convened on 20 June 2016 in Jakarta. The Dialogue was hosted by the Jakarta Japan Club.

The Dialogue provides a useful mechanism for the FJCCIA members to be updated  on the latest developments and progress made in the implementation of various initiatives under the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), while at the same time, to brief the Secretary-General of ASEAN on their respective strategic corporate directions and business plans in ASEAN in the short-to-medium term.  They also exchanged views on issues that need to be addressed and resolved to attract more Japanese foreign direct investment (FDI) and to develop the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in ASEAN.

Japan is traditionally one of the largest investors in ASEAN.  In 2015, FDI inflow from Japan to ASEAN amounted to USD 17.3 billion, accounting for about 14.5% of total FDI inflow to ASEAN.  The manufacturing sector remains the largest contributor of Japanese FDI to ASEAN.

To deepen the content of discussion, this year’s Dialogue also included a substantive consultation between the FJCCIA members with the Chairpersons of three ASEAN sectoral bodies – the ASEAN Coordinating Committee on ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement, the ASEAN Coordinating Committee on Customs and the ASEAN Coordinating Committee on Standards and Quality.

The FJCCIA comprises Japanese chambers of commerce and industry operating in the ASEAN region, with a total membership close to 7,000 member companies as of June 2016.
