Jakarta, 17 June 2016 – ASEAN’s vibrant economy and vast market with large young population are valuable potentials for Brazil to tap on, said the new Ambassador of Brazil to ASEAN, H.E. Rubem Antonio Corrêa Barbosa. He added that Brazil is encouraged with ASEAN’s dynamism and will work closely with the region to foster stronger ties.

Ambassador Rubem Barbosa today presented his letter of credence to H.E. Le Luong Minh, Secretary-General of ASEAN, at the ASEAN Secretariat. Ambassador Rubem Barbosa is the third Ambassador of the Federative Republic of Brazil accredited to ASEAN, succeeding H.E. Paulo Alberto Soares who completed his tenure last year. Prior to his appointment as Brazilian Ambassador to ASEAN, Ambassador Rubem Barbosa was the Ambassador of the Federative Republic of Brazil to Australia.

Ambassador Rubem Barbosa is also encouraged with the positive growth in trade volume after a slight decline last year. He said that two-way trade amounted to USD 20 billion in 2014 and it dipped to USD 18 billion in 2015 while for 2016 it is projected to rebound to around USD 19 billion based on the trade volume for the first five months of this year.

Congratulating Ambassador Rubem Barbosa on his assumption of office, Secretary-General Minh looked forward to working with the new Ambassador in strengthening relations between ASEAN and Brazil. He also stressed the importance of strengthening inter-regional relations, such as through the Forum for East Asian and Latin American Cooperation (FEALAC) and through the ASEAN-CELAC (Community of Latin America and Caribbean (CELAC) framework.

Secretary-General Minh also recalled Brazil’s proposals to collaborate in the areas of sports, renewable energy and tourism, and encouraged Ambassador Rubem Barbosa to explore possible collaboration in these and other areas of cooperation.
